Frequently
Asked Questions
Purchasing
New Furniture?
Important Points to Consider
|
|
|
1. Will the style go out of fashion in three
years? (back to the top)
Our furniture has been in style in America for 150 years.
It coordinates well with most other styles, too.
|
|
2. Is the construction going to last? (back
to the top)
We use only First and Select grades of hardwoods, kiln-dried
to a moisture content of 6% -8%. We guarantee it against joint
failure for the life of the original owner, or we repair it
free of charge.
|
|
3. Is the furniture made of solid wood?
Ours is, even drawer bottoms. Most of today's mass-produced
furniture is not made of solid hardwood: it's made with veneer
over plywood or particleboard (glued sawdust). We don't build
in oak. Oak is not stable enough for furniture because it
tends to warp.

|
|
4. Can I adjust the dimensions of a
table to suit my taste and requirements?
At ADAMS, you can. We are custom furniture makers.
We do not build until your order it.

|
|
5. Is the finish durable? Is it safe? (back
to the top)
Our tung oil and urethane finish penetrates deeply into the
wood and polymerizes or bonds with itself and the wood. We
guarantee it for the life of the original owner. It is a clear,
natural finish. Our finishing method is 150 years old
and is environmentally safe. We finish all surfaces,
not just the outside. On the other hand, today's mass-produced
furniture is lacquer finished, sprayed over a vinyl sealer.
Lacquer does not bond well with wood. In addition, lacquer
needs to be constantly waxed.

|
|
6. Can I put my idea down on paper
and have a reasonable chance of having it built?
Within the general American style in which we work, we can
build just about any piece for your home or office, including
conference tables and bookcases. We can also build contemporary,
one-of -a-kind pieces. We do not work in "period"
furniture styles, such as Chippendale, Queen Anne, Hepplewhite
or Victorian, although we draw ideas from these styles on
occasion.

|
|
7. Is the furniture American made?
Ours is handmade by skilled craftsmen using lumber grown
in New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virgina. Much
mass-produced furniture contains lumber from the Far East
and India, often treated with insecticides banned in the United
States. Some or all of these pieces may even be made overseas.

|
|
8. Is the price right for me? (back
to the top)
Most people think carefully before purchasing quality furniture
because they want good looks, durability and value. Our handmade
furniture is not inexpensive, but if you consider the many
years it will be enjoyed, it offers the best value.
